Although his papers show he was born on May 28, 1879, Toussaint Marys Marquer was actually born in 1874 in St Heliers, Jersey. He was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Peter Marquer, and the husband of Caroline G. V. Marquer, of 21, Union St., Portsea, Portsmouth.

Toussaint was 5 feet 5 inches tall, had dark brown hair and blue eyes with a fresh complexion. He had tattoos on both arms and before enlisting was employed as a carpenter.

Joined the Royal Navy on December 28, 1898.
